"Отец истории искусства", флорентийский живописец и историограф Джорджо Вазари, приписывает Яну ван Эйку одно из самых фундаментальных нововведений в живописи. В первом издании своего "Жизнеописания художников" (1550) он утверждает, что именно Ян ван Эйк изобрел масляную живопись. Эти сведения приводятся в начале жизнеописания итальянского художника Антонелло да Мессины, произведения которого свидетельствуют о пристальном изучении мастером работ ван Эйка. Вазари рассказывает, как ван Эйк случайно обнаружил, что масла являются подходящим связующим для пигментов. Он ревниво охранял свое открытие и раскрыл свой секрет лишь ближайшим ученикам. Согласно Вазари, Антонелло покинул Италию и отправился в Нидерланды с исключительной целью выведать у ван Эйка тайны масляной живописи; там он был действительно посвященв секреты новых техник и впоследствии распространил их в Италии.
