Adversidad
Un hombre acostumbrado a las adversidades no es fácilmente sorprendido.
Comida
Sin la frugalidad nadie llega a ser rico, y con la frugalidad poquísimos llegarían a ser pobres.
Constancia
Los grandes trabajos no son hechos por la fuerza, sino por la perseverancia.
Costumbre
Las diminutas cadenas de los hábitos son generalmente demasiado delgadas para sentirlas, hasta que llegan a ser demasiado fuertes para romperlas.
Descanso
Si estáis ociosos, no permanezcáis solos; si estáis solos, no os mantengáis ociosos.
Dinero
Por oro no vendas lo que nunca podrás comprar con oro: la tranquila siesta, el satisfecho día, la limpia fama y la conciencia alegre.
Sin sobriedad nadie puede hacerse rico, y con ella muy pocos serán pobres.
Diversidad
El gran manantial del placer es la variedad.
Economía
El hombre que sabe gastar y ahorrar es el más feliz, porque disfruta de ambas cosas.
Esperanza
Donde la esperanza no existe, no puede existir el esfuerzo.

En el idioma está el árbol genealógico de una nación.
Libros
Lo que se escribe sin esfuerzo se lee, de ordinario, sin gusto.
No deseo conversar con un hombre que haya escrito más de lo que ha leído.
Ser preguntados por un autor qué es lo que pensamos de su libro es parecido a ser sometidos a la tortura: no tenemos la obligación de decir la verdad.
Su libro es bueno y original, pero la parte que es buena no es original y la parte que es original no es buena.
Máximas
Toda cita literaria contribuye, en cierta medida, a la estabilidad o al incremento del lenguaje.
Mente
Se puede tomar como compañera a la fantasía, pero se debe tener como guía a la razón.
Sociedad
La sociedad no puede subsistir sin recíprocas concesiones.
Verdad
El hombre prefiere que se digan cien mentiras acerca de él, a que se divulgue una sola verdad que desee tener oculta.
Vida
La vida es una píldora que ninguno puede tragarse sin endulzarla.
La vida humana es dondequiera un estado en que hay mucho que aguantar y poco que gozar.
