This book is a survey of the French architecture of the period. It begins with the origins of the style moderne under the last years of Louis XIV, discusses the end of Rococo and the return to antiquity, and concludes with the Revolutionary architecture and the house of Madame Recamier. Kalnein describes the development of palace and hotel architecture by the two great architects de Cotte and Boffrand, discussing such large urban projects as the reconstruction of Rennes and the Places Royales. He traces the return to antiquity (which began when the scholars of the Academic d'Architecture were sent to Rome), the revolutionary architecture with its grand, but never executed, projects, and the shift from neoclassicism to early romanticism. Kalnein also examines the decorative arts of the period, which became even more important than architecture in the Rococo period. Focusing on such architects as Boffrand, Gabriel, and Redoux, he shows how a study of their building decoration illuminates the evolution of style moderne, the battle between Rococo and Neoclassicism, and the dissemination of French styles throughout Europe. Wend von Kalnein
Wend Graf von Kalnein (* 24. Mai 1914 in Ludwigslust / Mecklenburg; † 22. November 2007 in Seekirchen am Wallersee) war ein deutscher Kunsthistoriker und Schriftsteller.
Leben und Wirken
Karl Wend Graf von Kalnein wurde 1914 als Sohn von Karl Erhard von Kalnein, der im gleichen Jahr gefallen ist, in Ludwigslust geboren. Er wuchs in Österreich auf. Von Kalnein studierte Jura und nach der Entlassung aus Kriegsgefangenschaft 1950 in Bonn Kunstgeschichte, Archäologie und Romanistik.
Im Zweiten Weltkrieg war von Kalnein Offizier in der Wehrmacht in den Einsatzgebieten Frankreich, Südrussland und Donauraum. Von Kalnein war Verbindungsoffizier zur Rumänischen Armee. Nach der bedingungslosen Kapitulation der Wehrmacht wurde er von Tschechen an die Rote Armee ausgeliefert. Die folgende Kriegsgefangenschaft verbrachte er in Sowjet-Georgien im Kaukasus, wo er – dank seiner Russisch-Kenntnisse – vorwiegend in der Verwaltung eingesetzt war. Die Gefangenen bauten dort unter unsäglichen Bedingungen zusammen mit sowjetischen Zwangsarbeitern das Stahlwerk in Rustawi auf. Von Kalnein musste 1949 auch bei den Ermittlungen gegen deutsche Gefangene wegen „Kriegsverbrechen“ dolmetschen, die von Misshandlungen und Erpressungen begleitet waren. Er erfuhr Antifa-Umerziehung und kam unter Spionage-Verdacht ins Gefängnis, weil er Georgisch lernte. Von Kalnein schrieb seine Lager-Erlebnisse im Kaukasus unmittelbar nach seiner Entlassung nach Österreich 1950 auf und trug diese erstmals 1951 in Paris vor. Sie waren Grundlage für sein bekanntes „Georgisches Tagebuch“, das 2002 noch durch den Autor selber veröffentlicht wurde.
1953 wurde von Kalnein zum Dr. phil. promoviert. Ihm wurde dann die Leitung der Markgräflichen Badischen Sammlungen in Salem übertragen. Ab 1957 war er Direktor des Zähringer-Museums in Baden-Baden, danach Kustos an den Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Kassel. 1964 bis zum Ruhestand 1979 hatte von Kalnein die Position des Direktors des Kunstmuseums Düsseldorf. 1979 erhielt er noch eine Honorarprofessur für Kunstgeschichte an der Universität Salzburg.
Von Kalnein lebte in seinen letzten Lebensjahrzehnten in Seekirchen in Österreich. Er heiratete 1959 Livia von Thielmann. Aus der Ehe gingen die drei Kinder Heinrich von Kalnein (1960), Albrecht von Kalnein (1962) und Alexandra von Kalnein (1964) hervor. Von Kalnein starb 2007 in Seekirchen, wo sich auch seine letzte Ruhestätte befindet.
