Iain M. Banks
Iain Menzies Banks (* 16. Februar 1954 in Dunfermline, Fife, Schottland) ist ein schottischer Schriftsteller.

Leben
Seine Mutter ist eine ehemalige Eiskunstläuferin, sein Vater Matrose. Mit 14 Jahren entschloss sich Banks, Schriftsteller zu werden und stellte zwei Jahre später seine erste Erzählung fertig. Banks studierte bis 1974 in Stirling Philosophie, Englisch und Psychologie. Nach dem College arbeitete er als Portier eines Krankenhauses, Angestellter, Gärtner und Techniker. Alle Berufe ließen ihm ausreichend Zeit, seine schriftstellerischen Ambitionen zu verfolgen. Danach trampte er durch Europa und arbeitete als Techniker für British Steel. Nachdem er 1978 die USA von Washington, D.C. bis Los Angeles durchquert hatte, arbeitete er für IBM in Greenock und zog 1979 nach London. 1980 schrieb Banks in London seinen ersten Roman Die Wespenfabrik, der 1984 veröffentlicht wurde und mit dem er auf einen Schlag weltberühmt wurde. Seither schreibt Banks regelmäßig Romane und gelegentlich Kurzgeschichten, die in Großbritannien fast alle Bestseller wurden. In Deutschland sind die Bücher jedoch weniger bekannt. Seit der ersten Buchveröffentlichung 1984 lebt er in Kent.
Iain Menzies Banks schreibt unter dem Namen Iain Banks Romane im Allgemeinen und unter dem Namen Iain M. Banks insbesondere Science Fiction, wobei auch die ersteren bisweilen phantastische Elemente enthalten. In den deutschen Ausgaben seiner Werke wird die Unterscheidung zwischen Iain Banks und Iain M. Banks nicht gemacht; sie sind alle unter dem Namen Iain Banks erschienen.

Karsten Kruschel über Barfuß über Glas: "Bei aller Seltsamkeit dieses Buches, das Herkömmliches und Konventionen erfrischend souverän beiseiteläßt: Alle drei Handlungsstränge schildern nur und ausschließlich vertraute Dinge. Intrigen, Niedertracht, Zurückweisung, Unverständnis und Ablehnung erlebt jeder in der einen oder anderen Form. Banks liefert hochkonzentrierte, eindringliche Bilder davon... Zwar erschien dieser Roman unter dem Etikett 'Science Fiction', doch hat er mit dem, was man sich landläufig darunter vorstellt, herzlich wenig zu tun. Er hätte auch bei Luchterhand, Hanser oder einem anderen Haus 'edler' Literatur erscheinen können, dreißig Mark teurer und in allen Feuilletons besprochen."[2]
