JSTOR was originally conceived as a solution to one of the problems faced by libraries, especially research and university libraries, due to the increasing number of academic journals in existence. The founder, With the success of this limited project, Bowen and Kevin Guthrie, then-president of JSTOR, were interested in expanding the number of participating journals. They met with representatives of the Usage and contents JSTOR access is licensed mainly to libraries, universities and publishers all over the world. Some institutions with Athens subscriptions have access to it. Licensee institutions can make JSTOR available to their members free of charge through the Internet. Individual subscriptions are also available to certain journal titles through the journal publisher. As of July 2007, JSTOR material is provided by 446 publishers. Nearly 53 million searches of the archives were performed between January and July 2007. In addition to its use as an archive for individual journals, JSTOR has also been used as a research source. The breadth of material in the archive makes it useful in investigating trends in linguistics over time.cite journal | author=Shapiro, Fred R.| title=A Study in Computer-Assisted Lexicology: Evidence on the Emergence of Hopefully as a Sentence Adverb from the JSTOR Journal Archive and Other Electronic Resources| journal=American Speech| year=1998| volume=73| issue=3| page=279-296| url=http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0003-1283%28199823%2973%3A3%3C279%3AASICLE%3E2.0.CO%3B2-G | pages=279 | doi=10.2307/455826] The availability of many journals on JSTOR is controlled by a " Related projects Ithaka Harbors, Inc., a non-profit organization based in New York City and Princeton, New Jersey, works closely with JSTOR and ARTstor in the areas of finance, human resource management, information technology, software development, research, and strategic guidance. ee also * References Further reading *cite journal|last=Gauger|first=Barbara J.| title=JSTOR usage data and what it can tell us about ourselves: is there predictability based on historical use by libraries of similar size?| journal=OCLC Systems & Services| year=2006| volume=22| issue=1| pages=43–55|doi=10.1108/10650750610640801 External links * [http://www.jstor.org JSTOR] - Homepage.
