RIVERS WILLIAM HALSE (1864-1922)

Après des études de médecine, Rivers s’oriente vers la psychologie expérimentale, discipline dans laquelle ses travaux font bientôt autorité. Nommé en 1897 directeur du premier laboratoire de psychologie expérimentale à l’université de Londres, il est engagé la même année comme conférencier à l’université de Cambridge pour y fonder l’enseignement de cette discipline. Participant en 1898 en qualité de psychologue à l’expédition ethnographique du détroit de Torres, il applique les résultats de ses études psychologiques à la recherche anthropologique. Membre du St. John’s College, il étudie sur le terrain, en 1902, les Todas; il consacre à ce peuple polyandre du sud de l’Inde un ouvrage, The Todas (1906), qui est un modèle en matière de monographie ethnographique. Séjournant à deux reprises en Mélanésie, il publie une importante histoire de la société mélanésienne (History of Melanesian Society , 1914). Les idées de Rivers sur le système de parenté sont énoncées dans Organisation sociale et parenté (Kinship and Social Organization , 1914), mais ne présentent plus aujourd’hui qu’un intérêt historique. Son livre Instinct et Inconscient (1920) a fait beaucoup pour introduire la psychanalyse dans les milieux médicaux anglais.
