Lafargue, Paul

(1842-1911)
   socialist writer
Born in Santiago de Cuba, Paul Lafargue was a medical student when he began to follow socialist doctrines, being initially a disciple of pierre-joseph proudhon. In London he met Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx, whose daughter Laura he married. A member of the First international, Lafargue participated in the Paris commune (1871) and, after its defeat, went to Spain and Portugal, then to London, where he met jules guesde. Together, they joined the Parti ouvrier français (French Worker Party) in 1880. A deputy for Lille (1885-94), he opposed socialist participation in a bourgeois government. The author of two pamphlets, Le Droit à la paresse (1880) and La Religion du capital (1887), Lafargue helped to spread Marxist ideas (dialectical and historical materialism) in France.
