Holland, Henry Scott

(1847–1918)
   Theologian.
Holland was educated at the University of Oxford where he came under the influence of T.H. green. He was appointed a Canon of St Paul’s Cathedral in 1884 and Regius Professor of Divinity at Oxford in 1910. He was a member of Charles gore’s Lux Mundi group, and he is primarily remembered as a prominent member of the Christian Social Union. He was the author of works such as Logic and Life, Creed and Character and God’s City and his hymn ‘Judge eternal, throned in splendour’ is still sung today. His view of Jesus Christ as ‘the solution of all human problems’ struck a chord in many listeners, but his belief in human progress was sadly shattered by the events of the First World War.
   F. Lyttleton, The Mind and Character of Henry Scott Holland (1926).
