Hogarth, William, eines der seltensten Talente der bildenden Kunst. Der unerschöpfliche Ideenreichthum und die treuste Auffassung der Charaktere sind es nicht allein, die Hogarth's Werke zur höchsten Meisterschaft erhoben, es ist zugleich die tiefste Poesie und Lebendigkeit des Geistes. Hogarth, geb. zu London 1698, gestorben ebendas. 1764, war als Zeichner, Maler und Kupferstecher gleich berühmt. Die Thorheiten und Laster seiner Umgebungen auf die lächerlichste und beißendste Art zu schildern, war seine Aufgabe. Wie alle Carikaturen, so artete sein Geist für die Darstellung der Satire namentlich in einigen politischen Blättern aus und dieselben zogen dem Künstler vielfache Feindschaft und Verfolgung zu; dennoch bleiben seine Verdienste eben so unbestritten, als außerordentlich. Jedes Blatt, das aus seiner Hand hervorging, ist ein bis in's Kleinste treu und poetisch vollendetes Sittengemälde. Unter seine bekanntesten Werke gehören die vier Tageszeiten, die Punschgesellschaft, der Faule und der Fleißige, die umherziehenden Schauspieler. Ausgezeichnetes leistete Hogarth auch als Portraitmaler und das Bild seines Freundes Garrik in der Rolle des Richard III. ist wohl das gelungenste seiner Art.
