Friedlaender, Israel

(1876-1920)
   American scholar and communal leader. He was born in Kovel, Poland, and grew up in Warsaw. He became lecturer in Semitics at the University of Strasbourg, then in 1904 was appointed professor of Bible at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. He also taught at Dropsie College in Philadelphia and was active in Jewish communal life. He published studies of Islamic sects, Judeo-Arabic literature, and Jewish influences on Arabic folklore, and translated Simon Dubnow's History of the Jews in Russia and Poland.
