FRIEDLÄNDER MAX (1867-1958)

Historien d’art allemand, Friedländer se forme auprès de grands «connaisseurs» de la peinture allemande: Bayersdorfer, Scheibler — le spécialiste de l’«école de Cologne» — et W. von Bode, dont il est l’assistant pendant de nombreuses années aux musées de Berlin. Friedländer préfère être qualifié de «connaisseur» plutôt que d’«historien d’art». Il se défie des grandes théories artistiques pour s’efforcer de «pénétrer l’essence d’une œuvre individuelle». Et d’ajouter: «Correctement analysée, cette œuvre nous apprend quelque chose que ne nous révélerait pas une connaissance universelle de l’histoire de l’art.» Il est donc «connaisseur» comme un diagnosticien qui parvient à identifier le mal par intuition, tandis que l’historien est comparable au pathologiste, qui essaie de comprendre les causes du mal par la méthode expérimentale (pour reprendre l’image proposée par Panofsky). Mais dans certains de ses écrits, Friedländer arrive à concilier les deux voies de recherche: il est capable, en effet, de rationaliser son discours sur l’œuvre d’art tout en restituant dans son intégralité la première impression qu’il éprouva devant cette œuvre. Il est donc profondément hostile à l’«idéal d’un scientisme ascétique qui exige le sacrifice de son propre plaisir».

On doit à Friedländer un grand nombre d’écrits sur le domaine qu’il connaît à la perfection: la peinture néerlandaise des XVe, XVIe et XVIIe siècles. Son ouvrage monumental Die Altniederländische Malerei (14 vol. publiés de 1924 à 1937) est conçu comme une suite de monographies et de catalogues raisonnés consacrés à des artistes, et témoigne d’une connaissance à la fois «sensualiste» et encyclopédique de la production artistique examinée. Ses conceptions sur la fonction du «connaisseur», sur l’attribution, la joie de la contemplation artistique sont exposées dans De l’art et du connaisseur (Von Kunst und Kennerschaft , Oxford et Zurich, 1946). Citons en outre ses études sur l’estampe (Der Holzschnitt , 1917), sur Breughel (1921), Altdorfer (1923), sur son ami Max Liebermann (1924). C’est enfin Friedländer qui étudia le premier les peintres maniéristes d’Anvers.
