Frith, William Powell
Frith, William Powell, engl. Maler, geb. 9. Jan. 1819 in Studley (Yorkshire), trat 1835 in die Londoner Akademie ein und entwickelte sich bald zu einem der bedeutendsten Genremaler. Anfangs behandelte er Motive aus Dichtern und Romanschriftstellern, dann Stoffe aus dem Leben. Seine Fähigkeit, den spezifisch nationalen Charakter des englischen Lebens im Volk wie in der höhern Gesellschaft mit großer Treue und seinem Humor wiederzugeben, erwarb ihm eine große Volkstümlichkeit. Im Vortrag sind seine Gemälde elegant, in der Farbenwirkung von einer nicht gerade unharmonischen, wohl aber der Wahrheit nicht immer entsprechenden Buntheit. Seine Hauptwerke sind: der Derby day (1858, London, Nationalgalerie), das Seeufer in Ramsgate (der Königin Viktoria gehörig), Lord Foppington, seine Abenteuer erzählend, die Verhaftung auf der Eisenbahnstation (1861), die Vermählung des Prinzen von Wales (1863), der Weg zum Verderben, eine Reihe von fünf Bildern, Swift und Vanessa (1881), eine Kunstausstellung (1883), Cromwell an der Leiche Karls I. (1884) und John Knox in Holyrood (1885). F. ist Mitglied der königlichen Akademie in London. Er veröffentlichte: »My autobiography and reminiscences« (Lond. 1887, 2 Bde.), »Further reminiscences« (das. 1888) und »John Leech, bis life and work« (1891, 2 Bde.).
