Bourdillon, Francis William

(1852-1921)
   Sussex-born and educated at Worcester College, Oxford, he was a royal tutor at Cumberland Lodge. His poem "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" secured his fame. He also edited poems and chronicles from Old French; his edition and translation of Aucassin and Nicolette (written by an anonymous troubadour of the thirteenth century) was published in 1887. In 1906 the Bibliographical Society published his study "The Early Editions of the Roman de la Rose." Some of his other publications: Among the Flowers, and Other Poems, 1878. Young Maids and Old China: Verses, 1888. Where Lilies Live and Waters Wind Away: Verses, 1889. Ailes d'Alouette, 1890. A Lost God, London, 1891. Sursum Corda, 1893. Minuscula: Lyrics of Nature, Art and Love, 1897. Through the Gateway, 1900. Preludes and Romances, 1908. Christmas Roses for Nineteen-Hundred and Fourteen, 1914. Easter Lilies for nineteen hundred and fifteen, 1915. Gerard and Isabel: A Romance in Form of Cantefable, 1921.
