Zwingli, Ulrich, einer der größten Reformatoren des 16. Jahrh., geb. am 1. Januar 1484, fühlte schon früh den Drang in sich für die Verbesserung und Reinigung der Kirchenlehre zu wirken. Tiefe Studien während seines Aufenthaltes (als Pfarrer) in Glarus und Einsiedel befähigten ihn noch mehr zu diesem wichtigen Geschäfte, und am 1. Januar 1519 verkündigte er in seiner Predigt im Münster zu Zürich, wohin er berufen war, seinen Entschluß: einzig im evangelischen Sinne zu lehren, von der Kanzel dem überraschten Volke. Z's Lehren (s. reformirte Kirche) gewannen schnell überall Anhänger, welche selbst sein Streit mit dem heftigen Luther nicht wankend machen konnte. Persönlich mild und sanft, eilte er doch sogleich mit ins Feld, als Zürich seiner Lehre wegen von den katholisch gebliebenen Cantonen angegriffen wurde; er starb den Tod für Vaterland und Glauben in der Schlacht bei Cappel am 11. October 1531.
