May, Robert, Militärschriftsteller, geb. 27. Juni 1836 in Kassel, gefallen in der Schlacht bei Amiens 27. Nov. 1870, trat 1853 in die preußische Armee, besuchte die Kriegsakademie und nahm mit großer Auszeichnung an allen Schlachten und Gefechten des Infanterieregiments Nr. 44 in den Kriegen von 1866 und 1870, in letzterm Jahr als Kompaniechef, teil. Er schrieb (anonym) während seines Kommandos zum Generalstab die geistreichen »Taktischen Rückblicke auf 1866« (3. Aufl., Berl. 1869), die großes Aufsehen erregten und in mehrere Sprachen übersetzt wurden, sowie später die Schrift »Über die preußische Infanterie von 1869« (das. 1870), die nicht ohne Einfluß auf die deutsche Fechtweise im französischen Kriege blieb.
