DUCHESNE LOUIS (1843-1922)

Prélat français et historien du christianisme ancien, né à Saint-Servan, mort à Rome. Après de solides études universitaires à la Sorbonne et une mission scientifique au Mont-Athos, Louis Duchesne devint professeur à l’Institut catholique de Paris, où il forma ses étudiants (parmi lesquels Loisy et Batiffol) à une méthode rigoureuse; mais, par ses conclusions, il rencontra l’hostilité inquiète des autorités de tutelle. L’accueil des milieux savants fut tout différent: en 1885, il obtenait une chaire d’enseignement sur les Antiquités chrétiennes à l’École pratique des hautes études; en 1889, il était élu à l’Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres; en 1895, il fut nommé par le gouvernement directeur de l’École française de Rome, et il conserva ce poste jusqu’à sa mort; enfin, en 1911, il entra à l’Académie française.

Il avait la réputation de savoir en son domaine tout ce qu’on pouvait savoir de son temps. Grand travailleur, bien organisé, il a laissé une œuvre scientifique importante et étendue qui a fait date. Doué d’un grand talent littéraire qui fit de lui un épistolier de premier ordre, d’un esprit vif et caustique, il a longtemps exercé une critique impitoyable sur les publications relevant de sa compétence. Les théologiens lui ont reproché de simplifier leurs questions, d’en méconnaître la gravité et d’en parler sur un mode volontiers léger, voire de façon inexacte. Leur susceptibilité fit mettre à l’Index en 1911 les tomes parus de son Histoire ancienne de l’Église : il se soumit mais n’en guérit jamais. Cette mesure doit d’ailleurs être replacée dans le cadre de la crise moderniste; Duchesne ne pouvait échapper à ses remous. Il passait pour acquis aux idées nouvelles, sans qu’on sût exactement auxquelles ni jusqu’où il adhérait: lui-même n’a jamais révélé comment il conciliait sa critique et sa piété, ou plutôt, peut-être, comment il faisait à chacune sa part.
