Goldsmith, Oliver
Goldsmith, Oliver, 1728 zu Pallas in der irländischen Grafschaft Longford geboren, der Sohn eines armen Landgeistlichen, studirte durch Unterstützung seiner Verwandten zu Edinburgh und Leyden, führte aber ein so unregelmäßiges Leben, daß, als er einst im Spiel eine große Summe verloren hatte, er die Universität verließ, um Europa zu durchwandern, und sich durch Flötenspiel auf den Dörfern seinen Unterhalt zu verschaffen. In Padua wurde er Doctor der Medicin. 1751 kehrte er nach England zurück. Hier übernahm er eine Stelle bei einer kleinen Schule, wurde dann Apothekergehilfe, darauf Gehilfe eines Chemikers und endlich 1758 Arzt bei einer indischen Faktorei, welches Amt er jedoch bald aus Widerwillen gegen ein gebundenes Leben aufgab. Jetzt begann er als Schriftsteller aufzutreten. Seine Werke und besonders »der Landprediger von Wakefield« fanden großen Beifall. 1769 ward er zum Professor der alten Geschichte bei der englischen Malerakademie ernannt. 1770 besuchte er Paris und starb 1774 am Nervenfieber. Eine lebhafte, fruchtbare, schöpferische Phantasie, ein zartes sittliches Gefühl, elegante Darstellung des leicht und schön Aufgefaßten, Laune, Wahrheit und Gemüthlichkeit zeichnen ihn als Schriftsteller aus. Sein »Landprediger« ist ein Meisterwerk, dem wenige Romane an die Seite gestellt werden können.
