The Ballad of Reading Gaol and Other Poems

This poem - originally published anonymously, written after Wilde's two year's hard labor in Reading prison - is the tale of a man who has been sentenced to hang for the murder of the woman he loved. The Ballad of Reading Gaol follows the inmate through his final three weeks, as he stares at the sky and silently drinks his beer ration. Heart-wrenching and eye-opening, the ballad also expresses perfectly Wilde's belief that humanity is made up only of offenders, each of us deserving a greater charity for the severity of our crimes.

Adversidad
El mundo se ha reído de sus propias tragedias, como único medio de soportarlas.

Experiencia
Experiencia es el nombre que todos dan a sus propios errores.
Familia
Los niños comienzan por amar a sus padres. Cuando ya han crecido, los juzgan, y, algunas veces, hasta los perdonan.
Felicidad
Con la libertad, las flores, los libros y la Luna, ¿quién no sería perfectamente feliz?
Gozo
Los placeres sencillos son el último refugio de los hombres complicados.
Hablar
Que hablen de uno es espantoso. Pero hay algo peor: que no hablen.
Si no se hablara nunca de una cosa, sería como si no hubiese sucedido.
Historia
El único deber que tenemos con la historia es reescribirla.
Humanidad
A veces pienso que Dios creando al hombre sobreestimó un poco su habilidad.
Idea
Una idea no peligrosa no vale la pena de ser llamada idea.
Injusticia
Es muy difícil no ser injusto con lo que uno ama.
Libertad
Cuando hay demasiada libertad nunca hay bastante.
Libros
Si no podéis disfrutar leyendo un libro repetidas veces, de nada sirve leerlo una sola vez.
Memoria

Mentira
Un cínico es un hombre que sabe el precio de todas las cosas e ignora aún el valor de una sola.
Muerte
El que vive más de una vida debe morir más de una muerte.
Naturaleza
Ser natural es una pose demasiado difícil.
Necedad
Es lo suficientemente sensato como para hacer tonterías de vez en cuando.
Pareja
El matrimonio es un 97 por 100 de conversación.
Los hombres cuando son buenos maridos son atrozmente aburridos, y cuando no lo son, resultan de una vanidad abominable.
Los hombres se casan por cansancio; las mujeres por curiosidad; ambos quedan chasqueados.
Se debería estar siempre enamorado. Por esta razón uno no deberá casarse nunca.
Si una mujer se vuelve a casar al quedarse viuda, odiaba a su primer marido; si un hombre se casa por segunda vez, adoraba a su primera esposa.
Peligro
Todo es peligroso. Pero de no ser así, no valdría la pena vivir.
Pobreza
Recomendar sobriedad al pobre es grotesco e insultante a la vez. Es como decir que coma poco al que se muere de hambre.
Sentimiento
Siempre hay algo de ridículo en las emociones de las personas que se han dejado de querer.
Sociedad
Formar parte de la sociedad es un fastidio, pero estar excluido de ella es una tragedia.
Tiempo
Cada instante que pasa nos arrebata un pedazo de rostro.
El hombre que se ocupa de su pasado no merece tener un porvenir.
El pasado podría aniquilarse. Siempre las penas o el olvido pueden hacerlo. Pero el porvenir es inevitable.
Trabajo
El trabajo es el refugio de los que no tienen nada que hacer.
Tristeza
Las lágrimas son el refugio de las mujeres feas, pero la ruina de las bonitas.
Valor
Un cínico es un hombre que conoce el precio de todo y no da valor a nada.
Verdad
Dad una careta al hombre y os dirá la verdad.
La verdad rara vez es pura, y nunca simple.
Si uno dice la verdad, tarde o temprano será descubierto.
Vicio
El supremo vicio es la estrechez de espíritu.
Vida
Considero la vida una cosa demasiado importante para hablar nunca de ella en serio.
Para la mayoría de nosotros, la verdadera vida es la vida que no llevamos.
