JONES LEROI (1934- )

Poète, conteur, essayiste (Le Peuple du blues , Blues People , 1963), romancier (Le Système de l’Enfer de Dante , The System of Dante’s Hell , 1965; Histoires , Tales , 1967), auteur dramatique (Le Métro fantôme , Dutchman , 1964; Théâtre noir révolutionnaire , Four Black Revolutionary Plays , 1969), essayiste (Raise Race Rays Raze: Essays Since 1968 , 1971), Leroi Jones est d’abord proche du mouvement beatnik avant de se faire le prophète de la «révolution noire» et du retour à l’Afrique, dans le sillage des Black Panthers. Il se fait appeler Imanu Amiri Baraka à partir de 1968. Pour ce militant noir, la littérature et l’art n’ont de sens qu’en tant qu’actes politiques débouchant sur la prise de conscience et l’action révolutionnaire; le but poursuivi: la destruction de l’Amérique blanche; puis, dans une perspective internationaliste, la suppression de la domination blanche partout où elle existe.

Pour ce faire, il faut d’abord briser les fausses valeurs: refuser la culture blanche, ses religions, son rationalisme et, surtout, le mythe de l’intégration pacifique; il faut supprimer chez les Noirs l’habitude d’utiliser la société blanche comme code de référence. Privilégier l’irrationnel et la magie, la spécificité afro-américaine, c’est-à-dire dégager la nécessité impérieuse de se percevoir comme Noir, d’appréhender le monde en tant que Noir, et de le transformer pour les Noirs (Black Music , 1967, Black Value System , 1970).

Dans l’enfer de Jones, qui compare l’Enfer de Dante aux ghettos noirs des villes américaines, le cercle de la violence est occupé par les Blancs. Cette violence exaspérée, il convient maintenant que le monde noir se l’approprie. C’est pourquoi chaque œuvre de Jones est une flambée brutale de destruction, qui commence par le langage et s’inspire volontiers d’Artaud et de Genet. Pour Jones, en effet, les véritables sources de l’aliénation sont de nature culturelle, et la révolution doit donc s’appuyer sur le verbe: le sien est iconoclaste, et la poésie est avant tout une arme: «Nous voulons des poèmes qui tuent.»
