Il comptait parmi ses coll?gues Aschile Gorky, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, et d’autres issus de l’?cole dite de New York. En 1947, il d?veloppa l’action painting ou, en termes moins pr?cis, le dripping. Il s’int?ressait ? un processus de cr?ation et d’expression du moment, impliquant le moins de r?f?rences possibles ? la r?alit? visuelle. Abandonnant les pinceaux, le chevalet et la palette, il contr?lait lui-m?me les quantit?s de peinture qu’il faisait couler ou projetait sur une toile g?n?ralement tr?s grande qu’il avait l’habitude d’?taler sur le sol. Bien que son obsession premi?re f?t l’expression de sa propre vie int?rieure (subconscient) ? travers son art, sa vie ?motionnelle ?tait sans conteste tr?s instable, son approche du processus cr?atif et la plupart de ses oeuvres boulevers?rent de fa?on d?finitive l’?volution de l’art en Am?rique.
