This guide written by order of His Eccellency the Minister of Instruction, contains the result of studies on the ruins of Pompeii undertaken by myself and other experts. This fact must weigh with the reader, who will find many things asserted without proof. Instead of detailed descriptions of the ruins, I have preferred as much as possible, their reconstruction, as a spur to the imagination of the visitors, who, passing through the desolated streets of the Dead City, would rather be enabled to understand Pompeii in its entirety, than study an analysis of its actual condition. In order that the visitor may in some measure be prepared to comprehend the mute language of these ruins and receive the right impression, I have decided to offer an introduction, which, briefly touching on various subjects, cannot but be useful to all who wish for a precise and succinct account of Pompeii.
