Этот альбом представляет собой первую публикацию полного и систематического исследования русского рисунка. Здесь воспроизводится свыше 200 работ, датированных XVIII, XIX и началом ХХ века. Сюда вошли рисунки художников академического жанра (Лосенко, Козловский), графические произведения хорошо известных российских художников, которые были также хорошими рисовальщиками (Кипренский, Карл Брюллов, Александр Иванов), работы Шишкина, Кустодиева, Врубеля, Репина и Валентина Серова, замечательных своей острой психологической проницательностью, и, наконец, большое число работ, которые выделяются своими стилем и манерой, выполненных в начале ХХ века Петровым-Водкиным, Шухаревым, Григорьевым и Малявиным.
