When Dorothy came back from the dead, Aaron noticed that some people simply ignored the fact; some seemed to have forgotten she had died in the first place; and others just walked straight on by. The accident that killed Dorothy - involving an oak tree, a sun porch and some elusive biscuits - leaves Aaron bereft and the house a wreck. As those around him fuss and flap and bring him casserole after casserole, Aaron ploughs on. He busies himself with work at the family firm, a publisher with a successful line in "Beginner's Guides" to every stage and aspect of life. But then Dorothy starts to materialize in the oddest places. At first, she only comes for a short while, leaving Aaron longing for more. Gradually she stays for longer, and as they talk they also bicker... The cracks that start to reappear in their perfectly normal marriage are as well worn and familiar to Aaron as Dorothy herself. As Aaron starts to emerge from his grief, they are also a reassuringly poignant reminder that life may move on, but some things will forever remain the same.

Tyler worked as a bibliographer and librarian before settling in Baltimore in 1967 and beginning to write full-time. Her novels, comedies of manner marked by compassionate wit and precise details of domestic life, include Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant (1982), The Accidental Tourist (1985; film, 1988), Breathing Lessons (1988, Pulitzer Prize), and A Patchwork Planet (1998). Several focus on eccentric middle-class people living in chaotic, disunited families in Baltimore.

      American novelist and short-story writer whose comedies of manners are marked by compassionate wit and precise details of domestic life.

      Tyler, the daughter of Quakers, spent her early years in North Carolina and in various Quaker communities in the Midwest and South. At age 16 she entered Duke University, graduating three years later. She worked as a bibliographer at Duke and as a librarian at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, before settling in Baltimore, Maryland, where she turned to writing full-time.

      Tyler's first novel, If Morning Ever Comes, was published in 1964. Though it received little critical attention, it revealed the polished prose and understated examination of personal isolation and the difficulty of interpersonal communication that would also characterize her later work. Publication of The Tin Can Tree (1965) and The Clock Winder (1972) followed, but it was not until the appearance of Celestial Navigation (1974) and Searching for Caleb (1975) that Tyler came to nationwide attention. Her smooth, witty style and her descriptions of modern Southern life won her many readers, and her next novel, Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant (1982), was a national best-seller. Her highly successful novel The Accidental Tourist (1985) examines the life of a recently divorced man who writes travel guides for businessmen. It was made into a film in 1988. Tyler's later works include Breathing Lessons (1988), for which she won a Pulitzer Prize in 1989, Saint Maybe (1991), Ladder of Years (1995), and A Patchwork Planet (1998). She also wrote and published many short stories.
