Behn, Aphra

Behn, Aphra, eine englische Dichterin, berühmt wegen ihres Talentes und ihrer ausgezeichneten Schönheit. Sie hieß eigentlich Johnson, lebte in ihrer frühesten Jugend in Surinam, heirathete den Kaufmann Behn, ging mit diesem nach England und dann nach Antwerpen, wohin Karl II. ihren Gemahl als Consul gesendet hatte. In Antwerpen erfuhr sie den Plan der Holländer, welche die Themse hinausgehen, die englische Flotte überfallen und verbrennen wollten. Sie warnte ihre Landsleute und hintertrieb auf diese Art das Projekt. – Sie starb 1689 in London und wurde in der Westminsterabtei begraben. Aphra ist Verfasserin von 16 mehr und minder gelungenen Dramen, theils Lust- theils Trauerspielen. Das Beste darunter ist: the foign'd courtesans or a night's intrigue.
