Incidences of diabetes are increasing rapidly in specific populations, and has become a public health concern in many communities around the world. This concern includes Punjabi speakers in the South Fraser Health Region - adjacent to Vancouver, Canada. There is administrative interest in the health implications, especially for vulnerable groups, many of whom are English language low-literate. This study focuses on determinants of health, low English language literacy, and the forms of access to health information about managing a chronic condition. The discussion includes psychosocial aspects, such as the ``Golden Jail,`` whereby the immigrant appears to enjoy a much better lifestyle, but at a personal and social cost. The researcher conducted surveys with Punjabi speaking diabetes patients, with health care providers and practitioners, and key informants within the community.
