William Jack Baumol (* 26. Februar 1922 in New York City) ist ein US-amerikanischer Wirtschaftswissenschaftler. Baumol ist Entwickler des Konzeptes der Contestable Markets.

Leben und Wirken

Baumol erhielt 1942 den Bachelor of Social Science am College of the City of New York und 1949 wurde er an der London School of Economics zum Ph.D. promoviert. 1942 bis 1943 und 1946 arbeitete er am Landwirtschaftsministerium der Vereinigten Staaten, von 1947 bis 1949 war er Assistant Lecturer an der London School of Economics. Von 1949 bis 1992 war er Professor für Wirtschaftswissenschaften an der Princeton University. Seit seiner Emeritierung ist er in Princeton Senior Research Economist. Zugleich ist er seit 1971 Professor an der New York University und dort Direktor des C.V. Starr Center for Applied Economics.

Mit dem Konzept der Contestable Markets (dt. angreifbare Märkte) werden im Monopol eingeschränkte Renditen erklärt. Dadurch, dass der Monopolist hohe Renditen einfahren kann, steigt auch die Attraktivität für Wettbewerber, in den monopolistischen Markt einzudringen. Nach Baumol ist also der Monopolist bestrebt, die Gewinnspannen gering zu halten, um sich in dem Markt vor Konkurrenz zu schützen.

Baumol ist verheiratet und hat zwei Kinder.
