Atsushi Akera

Atsushi Akera is an assistant professor and an historian of technology in the Science and Technology Department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Background

In June of 1986, Akera received his BA at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and STS (Science, Technology, and Society). He received his MA (August 1994) and his Ph.D (August 1998) at the University of Pennsylvania in the field of History and Sociology of Science.

During the summer of 1994, Akera was an instructor in the Dept. of Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. From 1994 up until 1999, he taught at the College of General Studies at the same university. Afterwards, he became a lecturer in the Department of Science and Technology Studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In 2002, Akera became assistant professor of the STS department at Rensselaer.

Akera's primary research is oriented on the social and institutional history of the Cold War. He is also interested in the cultural construction of technological images, as well as the history of consumerism.
