More Paperwork. Exploring the Potential of Paper in Design and Architecture

Производитель: "Phaidon Press"

Paper is generally presumed to be the stock-in-trade of the graphic design profession. However, due to the diverse qualities of paper, and the constant desire of designers to push the boundaries of their profession, its potential is being explored more and more by all disciplines of design. More Paperwork follows on from Paperwork, which looked at the use of paper in graphic design, and reviews the amazing developments in its application across all areas of design in the last ten years, including product, furniture, fashion and architecture. The interactive features of the first book have also been extended in the second, to create a range of special effects designed to be completed by the reader. Through the selected work of leading designers around the world, from Amsterdam to Tokyo and New York to Zagreb, this book sets out to demonstrate how the astounding and diverse qualities of paper can be applied. From an inspirational church by Shigeru Ban and a humorous airmail dress by Hussein Chalayan, to an intricate range of packaging by Pentagram and the Honey Pop chair by Tokujin Yoshioka, More Paperwork shows that paper can be used to create functional, exciting and innovative designs. The book will also include items that are not necessarily chosen for the beauty of their design, but rather because they demonstrate some of the astounding things that paper is capable of: these items still display an intrinsic beauty that will be demonstrated with beautiful photographs.

Phaidon Press

Phaidon Press is one of the leading publishers of books on the visual arts, including art, architecture, photography, and design worldwide. Competitors include other major art publishers such as Taschen, Abbeville Publishing Group (Abbeville Press, Inc.), Harry N. Abrams, Inc., Thames & Hudson, and Rizzoli.

Phaidon was founded in Vienna, Austria, in 1923 by Dr Bela Horowiz and Ludwig Goldscheider, with the objective of delivering high-quality books at affordable prices. They were able to achieve this as pioneers of the international co-edition and with large print-runs. Their first titles were not art books, but books on literature, philosophy and history. Phaidon's large format art books first emerged in 1936 with high-quality plates on Van Gogh, Botticelli, and the French Impressionists.

The occupation of the Nazis in Vienna forced the company to move to England. After the war, Phaidon launched a program of both popular and scholarly art book publishing. This included the critical catalogue of drawings in the royal collection at Windsor Castle and the "pocket" series of art history texts (now known as the Arts and Letters series).

In 1950, Phaidon published "The Story of Art" — a one volume survey of the history of art by renowned scholar Ernst Gombrich. Since then it has become one of the best-selling art books in history, selling a total of more than 7 million copies in 16 English-language editions and in translation in more than 30 other languages.

The company changed ownership several times in the 1970s and 1980s, until being acquired by the present owner, Richard Schlagman, in 1990.

In 2006, Phaidon entered the cookbook business by publishing their English translation of the Italian cookbook "Il cucchiaio d'argento" ("The Silver Spoon"); due to the this book's success in the Anglophone markets, it was later released in French and German editions and followed up by several other cookbook releases.

Noteworthy recent titles have included:
* "Century (book)"
* "The Art Book"
* "The Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture"
* "10x10" and the follow-up "10x10_2" (architecture)
* "Area" (graphic design)
* "The Silver Spoon"
* "1080 Recipes" by Spanish mother and daughter team Simone and Ines Ortega
* "Wallpaper* City Guides", created by Wallpaper* magazine. Twenty guides were released in 2006 and another 40 are being published in 2007
* ""
* "The Cream Series (Cream, Fresh Cream, Cream 3, Ice Cream)

Phaidon is also well-known for "The Contemporary Artists Series", which since 1995 has published monographs on important and emerging contemporary artists.

Today, Phaidon's headquarters are in London, with offices in New York, Paris, Berlin, Milan and Tokyo. The company publishes in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Japanese.

After the death of Alan Fletcher (graphic designer) the art direction of the publisher is now curated by Sonya Dyakova and Julia Hasting.
