A multifactorial pathogenesis has been implicated in the development of oral submucous fibrosis. These include areca nut chewing, nutritional deficiency, autoimmunity and genetic susceptibility; however leaching out compounds from areca nut remain the main etiology for Oral Submucous Fibrosis.
