Книга: «Western European Painting in the Hermitage Museum»

Картинная галерея Государственного Эрмитажа является главной и наиболее старой частью музея. Начало ее было положено купленными у берлинского купца Гоцковского в 1764 году двумястами двадцатью пятью картинами западноевропейских мастеров. За два столетия, прошедшие с тех пор, эрмитажная коллекция увеличилась до восьми тысяч картин. В галерее можно познакомиться почти со всеми школами и направлениями, существовавшими в Западной Европе с момента зарождения станковой живописи до середины XX века. Многочисленные шедевры, хранящиеся в выставочных залах и запасниках, снискали ей широкую известность и славу одной из лучших галерей мира. Ежегодно более трех миллионов посетителей музея со всех уголков Советского Союза и из многих зарубежных стран приобщаются к выдающимся творениям, созданным художественным гениемнародов Западной Европы.
