Travels in the Scriptorium

An old man sits in a room, with a single door and window, a bed, a desk and a chair. Each day he awakes with no memory, unsure of whether or not he is locked into the room. Attached to the few objects around him are one-word, hand-written labels, and on the desk is a series of vaguely familiar black-and-white photographs and four piles of paper. Then a middle-aged woman called Anna enters and talks of pills and treatment, but also of love and promises. Who is this Mr Blank, and what is his fate? What does Anna represent from his past - and will he have enough time to ever make sense of the clues that arise? After the huge success of The Brooklyn Follies, his new novel sees Auster return to the metaphysical territory familiar from his enormously influential The New York Trilogy. A dark puzzle, and a game that implicates both reader and writer alike, Travels in the Scriptorium is a mind-altering exploration of language, responsibility and the passage of time.'Travels in the Scriptorium returns to . . . the nihilistic gaiety of Beckett (in particular Krapp) or the sub-dermal violence of Pinter.'New Statesman

Auster, Paul

▪ American author
in full  Paul Benjamin Auster
born Feb. 3, 1947, Newark, N.J., U.S.

American novelist, essayist, translator, and poet whose complex mystery novels are often concerned with the search for identity and personal meaning.

After graduating from Columbia University (M.A., 1970), Auster moved to France, where he began translating the works of French writers and publishing his own work in American journals. He gained renown for a series of experimental detective stories published collectively as The New York Trilogy (1987). It comprises City of Glass (1985), about a crime novelist who becomes entangled in a mystery that causes him to assume various identities; Ghosts (1986), about a private eye known as Blue who is investigating a man named Black for a client named White; and The Locked Room (1986), the story of an author who, while researching the life of a missing writer for a biography, gradually assumes the identity of that writer.

Other books that feature protagonists who are obsessed with chronicling someone else's life are the novels Moon Palace (1989) and Leviathan (1992). The Invention of Solitude (1982) is both a memoir about the death of his father and a meditation on the act of writing. Auster's other writings include the verse volumes Unearth (1974) and Wall Writing (1976), the essay collections White Spaces (1980) and The Art of Hunger (1982), and the novels The Music of Chance (1990), Mr. Vertigo (1994), The Book of Illusions (2002), Travels in the Scriptorium (2007), and Man in the Dark (2008). He wrote screenplays for numerous films, including Smoke (1995), and he wrote and directed the films Lulu on the Bridge (1998) and The Inner Life of Martin Frost (2007).
