Madrid, romo Paris, como Roma, es una ciudad sobre siete colinas, que hoy, con las anexiones tiene, naturalmente, muchas mas. Quiza la primera fue ese alto contrafuerte que vigila el valle del Manzanares y en el que ya tenian los moros una fortaleza que los siglos han convertido en Palacio Real. Calles, callejones y plazuelas irian tendiendose poquito a poco del regio Alcazar a las Vistillas, a Santo Domingo, a la montana del Principe Pio, hasta hacer ese apretado laberinto que es el Madrid viejo, nudo, cuesco, semilla, del Madrid actual. Es dificil encontrar desde las colinas matritenses esas hermosas perspectivas en que Paris instala sus lujos de villa regalona y bien tenida. Lo que en nosotros ha quedado de moros nos hace preferir la sorpresa al despliegue y el recato a la exhibicion. Madrid es villa enredosa y un poco teatral, que guarda su encanto esquina tras esquina y que se disfraza en cada vaguada jugando a ser capital andaluza, castellana, manchega o levantina.
