The Kolomenskoye Museum of History, Art and Architecture is located on the right bank of the Moskva River, thirteen kilometres away from the Kremlin, the heart of Moscow. It is a beautiful architectural complex set in a stretch of Russian landscape which, amazingly, has survived within a huge city and now attracts visitors by the calm of its smoothly flowing river, its steep cliffs and the picturesque beauty of its old park. Many major events in the history of Russia between the 13th and 17th centuries are associated with Kolomenskoye. When Mongol-Tartar tribes invaded Russian lands in the 13th century, the inhabitants of the old town of Kolomna fled from their homes. According to legend, they founded a village near Moscow and called it Kolomenskoye in memory of their ruined town. The site attracted them because it was on high ground, well drained and protected by ravines, marshes and woods. Besides, there was good fishing and clean drinking water, and Moscow was not far away. ...
