Книга представляет собой пособие для изучающих английский язык или интересующихся английской художественной литературой в подлинниках. В нее включены тексты, которые не встречаются в существующих пособиях: отдельные короткие рассказы, отрывки из романов и повестей, драматические произведения или сцены из них, поэмы, стихи. Материалы в основном подобраны так, что они отражают в хронологическом порядке исторические события, связанные с г. Лондоном, историю знаменитых памятников древнего зодчества Лондона, его улиц и парков. Литературные произведения, разнообразные по языку и стилю, сопровождаются в ряде глав историческими комментариями, взятымииз Британской энциклопедии или научных трудов по истории Англии, и краткими биографиями писателей. Некоторые литературные произведения значительно сокращены, ноадаптированных текстов в книге нет. После текстов в каждой главе даются упражнения лексического характера - на употребление синонимов, антонимов, артиклей, предлогов, вопросы для...
