Серия: "Mega Square" Georgia O’Keeffe (Sun Prarie, Wisconsin, 1887 – Santa Fe, 1986) En 1905, Georgia O’Keeffe suivit des cours ? l’ Art Institute de Chicago et d?buta s?rieusement sa carri?re artistique. Elle s’installa ensuite ? New York et s’inscrivit ? l’Art Students League School. Georgia adorait les cours de nature morte dispens?s par le fringant William Merritt Chase, un des professeurs qui l’influenc?rent durant cette p?riode. Elle fr?quenta la galerie 291 et y rencontra son futur mari, le photographe, Alfred Stieglitz. Durant l’?t? 1912, elle suivit des cours ? l’universit? de Virginie aupr?sd’Alon Bement qui recourait ? une m?thode r?volutionnaire pour enseigner l’art, imagin?e par Arthur Wesley Dow. Les ?l?ves ne copiaient pas m?caniquement la nature, mais se voyaient enseigner les principes du dessin bas? sur les formes g?om?triques. Ils s’exer?aient ? diviser un carr?, dessiner au coeur d’un cercle ou encore placer un rectangle autour d’un dessin, puis organiser la composition en l’agen?ant par l’ajout ou l’?limination d’?l?ments. Georgia trouva que cette m?thode conf?rait une structure ? l’art et l’aidait ? comprendre les bases de l’abstraction. Au d?but de l’ann?e 1925, Stieglitz exposa les artistes encourag?s ? l’?poque du 291. C’est au cours de cette exposition que les peintures g?antes de fleurs de Georgia O’Keeffe, destin?es ? faire prendre conscience de la nature, furent pr?sent?es pour la premi?re fois. Les critiques acclam?rent cette nouvelle mani?re de voir. Elle d?testait cependant les connotations sexuelles que les gens associaient ? ses toiles, en particulier ? ce moment des ann?es 1920 o? les th?ories freudiennes commen?aient ? ressembler ? ce que nous appellerions aujourd’hui de la «psychologie de bazar ». L’h?ritage que Georgia laisse derri?re elle est une vision unique qui traduit la complexit? de la nature en formes simples.
